What is Polestar? Volvo’s speedy partner

What is Polestar? Well, unless you’re an astronomer or a Boy Scout, it’s Volvo’s official high performance and racing partner and has been since 1996. The reason you probably have never heard of them is because (a) Polestar has raced in European touring car series that receive little coverage or attention in North America, and (b) the high performance parts made and sold in Europe have not yet been sold over here.

We dug Volvo's 325 horsepower S60 R-Design when we tested it last summer, and those levels of performance are now more accessible thanks to a dealer-installed option through the manufacturer's racing partner, Polestar.

We should probably start with a quick recap. Back in April, Volvo debuted the 2012 S60 and XC60 US-spec models at the New York International Auto Show with a very special surprise: the company had found a way to tweak the standard T6 engine, which makes 300 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque, to an even more impressive 325 horsepower and 354 lb-ft.
